NHDC Community Center

   NHDC Community Center

The purchase in 1996 of a dilapidated theater owned by Logia Felipe Angeles de Cucamonga set NHDC on a course to assuring that the community would have a permanent location where it could serve its residents with social services and cultural activities. The Old Theater Building dates back to the activism of such deep-rooted community groups as Logia 19 of Sociedad Progresista Mexicana, Inc. and Logia 4 of Sociedad Protectora Femenil, Inc. In late 2000, the site once-again received townspeople, but now as the Northtown Community Center, a newly-constructed hall filled with services, social activities, and cultural programs.

NHDC’s staff coordinates the activities in the bustling space. Children and youth arrive for afterschool recreation, tutoring, and mentoring programs. Adults fill the rooms during classes in English, high school equivalency, and job training. Seniors dine at the center for breakfast and lunch while families come for assistance in their job search, financial planning, and one-on-one counseling on a variety of issues. A food distribution program, social gatherings, and cultural celebrations are ongoing.

A full-time director and two parttime staff coordinate the programs with the assistance of a large crew of committed and energetic volunteers. Together, they keep Northtown Community Center a vibrant hub for the community.
